The cost was 1 per month (which was about $1.70 in those days) and I certainly got what I paid for!

At first everything was fine: I paid up, they hosted my website. The trouble is, you don't realise you have bought rubbish hosting until things start to go wrong.

The first sign that all was not well came a few months later when I was unable to locate my website. I raised a support ticket and waited. Four days later came the reply "everything seems ok now". Four days of downtime without a sensible word from support made me feel more than a little uneasy.

Things seemed fine for a while after that but then another problem arose: when I tried to log into my control panel all I got was a message telling me the licence fee had not been paid. This time the reply to my support ticket was quicker, it only took two days. Unfortunately, however, it was completely unhelpful. The reply was "It seems to be a site-wide issue". Was I supposed to feel better because the whole site was messed up and not just my bit? They must have got round to paying the licence fee because after a few more days, login was available again.

After that, I wanted to move to a new host but I had never moved a website before and assumed it would be really difficult and technically challenging (actually it is extremely simple). As a result of this fear my website remained where it was.

The crunch came when my domain name came up for renewal. In response to an email from the hosting company, I visited their website to make the required payment. Their PayPal link and credit card options did not work and there were several error messages showing on the pages I visited.

Emails to their support and billing departments went unanswered. My only means of arranging payment was via their website, so I kept trying. Each time I visited, there were more error messages, nothing worked and it began to look as if the site was actually melting bit by bit. It seemed the company had just packed up and left their website to self destruct.

Enquiries revealed that the only way I could renew my domain name ownership was through the hosting company because they had registered it on my behalf and they retained control of it. As they could not be contacted, there were only two options available. The first was to pay an agent a pretty hefty (and non-refundable) fee to try to contact the hosting company and negotiate the purchase the domain name from them. The second option was to lose the domain.

When you have to choose web hosting, the first thing to look for is quality of support. To keep prices low, the easiest way for the company to economise is to provide sub-standard support. Forget the offers of unlimited bandwidth, hundreds of email accounts, spam filters and other freebies. If support is non-existent, give the company a miss no matter how good their other terms might seem.

Do you know how many of your newsletter subscribers have AOL addresses? AOL has approximately 24 million subscribers, so it's likely that a good portion of your subscribers are getting your e-mails at an AOL account.

I checked one on my own opt-in lists, and twenty-five percent of the subscribers to my list were using AOL addresses. That's a whole lot of people that may stop reading your text newsletter if you don't take some easy steps and cater to them.

The current version of AOL (9.0) is doing a nice job of reading HTML e-mail, but text e-mail to AOL is still a problem.

Most e-mail clients will make a URL clickable, but not AOL e-mail. Rather, the programmers at AOL created a system that recognizes HTML tags in text e-mail messages and formats those tags like they would display in a browser.

If you simply include a URL in your text without the formatting, AOL subscribers will have to cut and paste the address into their browser window. As you can imagine, newbies may not understand how to cut and paste, or they might just assume that your link doesn't work.

The solution is to show your links in two formats: a basic URL, and a special text link (it's actually just plain HTML that you'll put in a text email) that is clickable in AOL text e-mail messages.

Getting Organized and Motivated To Make money online

Before getting starting trying to make money online, follow these simple steps to get motivated and organized to work on your new business:

First, clear a work area for yourself in your home. Make sure it is far away from any distractions. The best place is a spare bedroom, preferably with a door that you can close to avoid distractions.

Second, figure out why you want to make money online. Write down a list of reasons. What do you wish to achieve? What would you do if you happened to get rich overnight? You can't be irresponsible with your money, or your business, or it will never flourish. Setup a simple plan to deal with your finances so you don't blow it all when the gold starts flowing in.

Third, take 15 minutes every night to plan what you need to do in the next day. This will make you far more productive. List things in order from top priority to lowest priority. Fourth, sketch out a solid plan for your online business. While it costs less and requires far less time to launch an internet business, you should still be planning out every step of the way. It will allow you to organize a daily "attack plan" to advance your business goals and make money online.

Fifth, stick to your plan. You can't flock from one thing to another in search for the "next great way" to make money online. Stick to the fundamentals - the stuff that has worked for years, and won't stop working. Find a market need, and fill the need. Once you have a plan, stick with it! You'll be surprised how far a little focus goes.

Now that you're organized and prepared to make money online, it's time to teach you something BIG. All online business and ways to make money online follow one simple formula:

Product + Traffic + Sales Page = $$$

Write that formula down. Let it sink into your head. It's simple, but powerful!

If you have a website that has tons of content and you're making money through Google AdSense, you're providing traffic to someone else's product (or service) and sales page. * High, long-term income potential.

* Repeatable: the more "work" you put in, the more results you get

* Allows you to "own" the entire formula: Product + Traffic + Sales Page

* Doesn't rely on others for your income (e.g., NOT affiliate marketing)

Unfortunately, most online courses don't meet these criteria. They encourage you take the easy path which produces only short-term results. Don't take their word for it - others are getting rich off of your hard work. You're getting only a tiny fraction of the pie, since a long-term customer can be worth hundreds, if not thousands. Would you be willing to trade a $10 or $20 commission for hundreds of dollars in the long run? You bet!

MLM Presentation Tip - What Your Prospect Wants

Some MLMers think that every minute spent listening is a minute they are not selling. They seem to think that a talking prospect is just taking up THEIR valuable time.

A lot of veteran network marketers believe that what the prospect needs more than anything is to be educated. They need to learn about your company, your products, your business, and you ... why you are better than anybody else. And the only way that'll happen is if YOU talk and your prospect listens.

Do you spend any time identifying your prospect's desires ... or do you think you already know them? That sure simplifies the process. If you know what they need, you don't need to spend any time listening to them. Just tell them what they need, what's best for them.

When your prospect is talking, do you listen then? Or are you busy planning what you're going to say next?

As your prospect tells you about their life situation or their business situation, are you busy thinking about your sale?

Is your plan to simply stick your deal down everyone's throat, because you know that works X% of the time?

Did you ever see the movie "The Music Man?" Based on a Broadway play, the movie came out when I was a kid. Professor Harold Hill was a travelling salesman, hitting every little community in the midwest, selling the townsfolk on the dream of having their kids be part of a glorious marching band.

The Professor sold musical instruments. He truly had the gift of gab ... could sell anything to anybody. That talkative salesperson with the golden tongue has been a cliche for a long time.

Have you ever been in a situation where the salesperson would not stop talking?

Of course you have.

I'll bet there have been times you bought just to avoid the ordeal of listening to ANOTHER salesperson who wouldn't stop talking.

A lot of people over the years have figured that if you could talk, you ought to be in sales. And as time has progressed, and MLM companies spend more and more time educating their distributors about their products, reps get the attitude more and more that they know better than the customer what the customer should have ... which means they need to listen even less.

You tend to think ... "I know this stuff. They want to know this stuff. I should talk. They should listen."

And there's the problem. Your prospect does not want to be talked at. They've been talked at since the beginning of time. What they want is to be heard.

If you're going to build relationships in a network marketing business, you need to ask the right questions, to find out who your prospect REALLY is. To do that, just listen. Then you can hear your prospect.

Affiliate Newsletter Tool for Affiliate Managers

I speak with lots of affiliate managers and hear a recurring frustration - many simply don't have the toolset to effectively communicate with their affiliates.

The creation of an HTML newsletter for their affiliates is a hurdle and it's keeping them from getting out mission critical information.

I just came across a tool called Affiliate Communicator that can change this for anybody that hasn't figured out how to code in HTML.

The Affiliate Communicator software has a wizard where you input the components of your newsletter. The tool has some suggested areas to include, like the commissions earned by your top five affiliates, but you have control over the content.

I'm a big advocate of including useful tips and information in the newsletters for affiliates. Affiliate Communicator enables the automatic insertion of relevant articles.

Personally, I would urge writing your own content.

The final step in the newsletter creation process is to choose from a template for the HTML and you can upload a custom header image.

The software also enables the generation of a text newsletter - not that you can't do it yourself, but it's quick to generate the text and HTML in the interface.

I am looking at offering my services as an affiliate marketer to small businesses. Where can I look for clients who are looking for people to run their affiliate programs and what would be the average salary expectations for a small business?

Rather than look for clients, I'd suggest making it easier for those potential clients to find you and learn about your Outsourced Program Manager (OPM) services.

It should go without saying, but you'll need to have a Web site that details the services you provide in affiliate management. When that is done, advertise your services in the pay per click search engines.

Also, submit a free listing to the Affiliate Buyer's Guide for the Outsourced Program Managers section.

Consider Advertising in the various affiliate marketing forums. There are also lots of affiliate marketing blogs where you could promote your services.

Other places to reach clients would be Advertising in Revenue magazine and being a sponsor at Affiliate Summit.

If you have relationships with any of the affiliate networks, ask them if they'd be willing to send some business your way. They get advertisers looking for an affiliate manager and you could help out be being a quality place to refer clients.

In addition to a fixed monthly retainer, ask for performance incentives as part of your remuneration.

Get a lawyer to draft an agreement for you to provide to potential clients and always get everything in writing.

4. Backend. There is where you get repeat sales. Make sure you capture your customers email address and stay in contact with them. Send them emails with useful tips and information relating to your products. In these emails, include offers for more of your products and services. If the customer was happy with their first purchase from you they will be more likely to buy from you again. Repeat customers are worth their weight in gold. Keep them happy and you have a steady stream of income.

5.Repeat. This does not need a whole lot of explanation. Just repeat the whole process for each website or product you develop.
